Master Thesis: Connected development off the Einstein Telescope by applying MBSE

Webseite Institute of Machine Elements and System Engineering

Description:
To detect gravitational waves, work is currently underway on the development of a large underground detector. The so-called Einstein telescope is intended to enable research into black holes and neutron stars.

Due to the size of the telescope (10x10km) and the required accuracy, an extremely precise coordination of all necessary subsystems is required. To achieve this, the MSE isresearching the processes and methods required to develop the Einstein Telescope (ET). The focus of the work is the application of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). An important component of MBSE is architecture models, which provide information about the system structure. These must be linked with requirements and simulation models. The methods required for this linkage must be developed and tested.

Tasks

  • Familiarization with the fundamentals of MBSE
  • Familiarization with sophisticated expert models provided by project partners like CERN
  • Developing methods to generate and link MBSE architecture models with expert models
  • Validation of the self-developed methods using data and models from ET development

Prerequisites:

  • Independent, reliable way of working and motivation to make an active contribution to current research in the field of MBSE
  • Motivation to contribute to the development of the next generation of gravitational wave detectors
  • Previous knowledge related to the topic as well as programming experience is desirable but not a prerequisite

We offer:

  • Flexible arrangement of main focuses
  • Immediate starting opportunity
  • Intensive support
  • Very good working atmosphere
  • The thesis is offered in German or English
