Bachelor/Master Thesis: Connecting the Engineering of the Einstein Telescope – Methodologies for modeling, linking and tracing requirements, functions and the physical structure

Webseite Institute of Machine Elements and System Engineering

The Einstein Telescope is a next-gen gravitational wave detector currently under development by the Einstein Telescope Organization. Gravitational waves are displacements in spacetime caused by orbiting and colliding mass objects such as black holes. The detection of these waves poses immense challenges regarding the precision of the instruments for the ETO, making for a complex system and its subsystems. To this end, the MSE is investigating how such complex systems can be developed systematically and consistently using Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE). By representing the system under development through integrated models instead of static documents, MBSE provides a single data repository for all stakeholders. This way, inconsistencies among the stakeholders are avoided. Current research addresses MBSE methodologies for modeling and linking engineering artifacts such as requirements, system functions and behavior as well as the physical structure, applicable to large and distributed science projects such as ET.

Possible Tasks:

  • Literature research regarding current MBSE methodologies, architecture modeling, and traceability
  • Development of methods for deriving subsystem architectures of the Einstein Telescope based on science cases
  • Method validation through application on a subsystem of ET

Prerequisites:

  • Independent and reliable working style
  • Interest in Model-Based Systems Engineering
  • Prior knowledge of Cameo Systems Modeler/Catia Magic or the 3Dxplatform is advantageous, but not a prerequisite

We offer:

  • Contribution to a prestigious pan-european science project
  • Individual arrangement of tasks
  • Immediate beginning or at a preferred later date
  • Individual supervision and supportive work environment

We look forward to your application by email:
