The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 32,000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, we work with more than 530 employees every day to make the production of the future more digital, more flexible and more sustainable. In the department »Production metrology«, we deal with the development of advanced measurement systems for diverse applications in production and life sciences.

As part of your thesis, you will perform simulation-based investigations to analyze the structural properties of optical components and their correlation with performance and characterization. Utilizing optical simulation tools and metrology systems, you will study the properties of optical components and their behavior under various conditions. You will have access to our state-of-the-art metrology laboratories, equipped with high-end commercial systems, optical simulation tools, CAD software, and a wide range of components for hands-on experimentation.

What you will do

  • Development and application of optical simulation models for analyzing structural properties
  • Investigation of key parameters affecting optical component characterization
  • Validation of simulation results through experimental measurements
  • Data analysis for enhanced optical component evaluation

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying optics and photonics, electrical/mechanical engineering, physics, or a comparable subject
  • A strong background in optics, data processing and analysis
  • First experience in optical simulation tools and optical measurement systems
  • An independent way of working and enjoying interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Good language skills in German and/or English

What you can expect

  • Ideal conditions for practical experience alongside your studies
  • Professional supervision and collaboration in a dedicated team
  • A state-of-the-art machine park equipped with edge cloud systems and 5G infrastructure
