Bachelor-/Master thesis: Digital risk management for the development of the complex system: the Einstein Telescope

Website Institute of Machine Elements and System Engineering

The Institute for Machine Elements and Systems Engineering at RWTH Aachen University conducts interdisciplinary research into a broad spectrum of current and future challenges relevant to both research and industry. The Systems Engineering – Design Methodology division of the MSE focuses in particular on methods of Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) as central elements of future industrial product development processes.

What it´s about:
The Einstein Telescope will be Europe’s most advanced observatory for gravitational waves. This system will enable us to detect collisions between black holes and gain insights into the origins of the universe. The development of such a complex system involves countless risks that threaten the success of the project. To address these risks at an early stage in the development of the Einstein Telescope, MBSE and AI approaches should be applied.

Potential tasks:

  • Familiarization with the development of the Einstein telescope, with a focus on risk management
  • Modelling risks and connecting them to development data
  • Development of risk libraries
  • Potential integration of AI approaches with knowledge databases (MBSE system model, knowledge graph)

Prerequisites:

  • Ability to work independently and reliably
  • Interest in complex systems and Model-based systems engineering
  • Previous experience with Catia Magic or the creation of LLMs is an advantage, but not essential

What we offer:

  • The opportunity to work on one of Europe’s most prestigious scientific projects
  • Flexibility in shaping your main areas of work
  • Intensive supervision
  • Immediate start or by arrangement

We look forward to your application by email:
