Masterarbeit: Multibody Modelling and Dynamics Analysis for the Mooring System of Floating Wind Turbines

Webseite Chair for Wind Power Drives

The Chair for Wind Power Drives researches the behavior of drive systems in modern multi-megawatt wind turbines. Research topics are increasing the availability, robustness and energy efficiency of wind turbines as well as decreasing levelized cost of electricity. A combination of software development tools and modern system test benches are used for this.

The need to increase renewable energy’s share in global energy production and to exploit offshore wind resources is moving wind farms further offshore and into deeper waters. The modelling of mooring systems and their behavior is essential for the research and development of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs).

In this thesis, you will create a multibody mooring system model for the floating wind turbine with a semi-submersible platform. Then, the mooring system will be integrated into an existing wind turbine model for aero-hydro-mooring-servo coupled simulation. Finally, using the results of the simulation to reveal the tethered motion of the floating platform and analyze the effect of dynamic mooring line on the loads of FOWT.

Tasks:

  • Familiarization with the multibody software Simpack
  • Modelling of the mooring system and integration into the existing models
  • Simulation of the motion responses of the fully-coupled model with mooring system
  • Simulation of the effect of the multibody mooring system on line tensions and other component loads

Prerequisites:

  • Motivation to work autonomously and responsibly
  • Previous knowledge of multibody and its software (Simpack) are desirable, but not required
  • Programming skills (MATLAB) are advantageous

We offer:

  • Professional supervision and collaboration in a dedicated team
  • Immediate start and rapid progress of the thesis
  • Thesis can be written in English
  • Possibility of publishing papers based on the project

We look forward to your application by email:
