The Institute for Machine Elements and System Development researches the fundamental structural and tribological behavior of machine elements and maps this behavior through experimentally validated model descriptions. These model descriptions are used to analyze and design the functional performance, energy losses, and acoustic behavior of complete technical systems, with a focus on drivetrain technology. In addition, the developed models serve as a basis for researching and developing methods for Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) as a central element in future industrial product development processes.
About your thesis:
The oil flow in rolling bearings is investigated experimentally to improvethe understanding of lubrication, friction losses, and bearing performance. Using an adapted RLP test rig, key flow phenomena such as oil distribution, splashing, backflow, pumping effects, and blockage are analyzed. Pressure, velocity, flow rate, and pressure drop are measured, while oil distribution is visualized with a high-speed camera. The study covers nine bearing geometries and four operating parameters (flow rate, immersion depth, rotational speed up to 5,500 rpm, and temperature from 20-80 °C), resulting in more than 500 experimental.
Tasks:

- Independent and reliable working style

- Initial experience in experimental work is desirable, but not mandatory
- Good German or English language skills
