The Institute of Machine Elements and Systems Engineering researches the fundamental structural and tribological behavior of machine elements. Validated multi-body simulation models are a cost-effective alternative to experimental tests for investigating the effects of loads that occur on individual components within a powertrain system.
Increasing power ratings of modern wind turbines led to growing challenges for their machine elements. In particular, rotor main bearings are required to operate reliably with low friction and wear. In recent years, polymer-coated plain bearings have gained increasing attention due to their beneficial friction and wear characteristics. However, their low thermal conductivity, electrical insulation properties, and specific degradation mechanisms pose significant challenges for conventional condition monitoring methods.
The aim of this thesis is to identify and evaluate suitable sensor technologies for the early detection of damage in polymer-coated plain bearings.
Tasks:
- Test bearing rig assembly
- Definition of a test matrix bearing tests and sensor application
- Conduction of tests according to the test matrix.
- Evaluation of sensor technologies regarding their capability of damage detection for polymer plain bearings
Requirements:
- Independent and reliable work approach.
- First experience and/or enthusiasm for experimental work.
