Motivation
The shallow moment method is a recently developed approach to describe shallow flow scenarios. In contrast to classical shallow flow models, which usually assume a static velocity profile over the depth of the flow, the shallow moment method allows for variables vertical velocity profiles. Validating the model, especially in the context of granular flows, is yet an aspect that has to be investigated. A suitable application is therefore the simulation of granular flows in a rotation drum since this experiment has been extensively studied in theory as well as in laboratory
experiments.
Problem Definition
In the first phase of the project, you will familiarize yourself with the theory of the shallow moment system and use existing code in order to implement a corresponding finite volume method in spherical coordinates. In the next step, you will investigate and implement different rheological models to simulate granular flow. Based on your project’s progress, the last phase will address the parameter estimation problem in order to replicate experimental data and validate the applicability of the shallow moments method for different settings of the rotating drum experiment.
