The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ( currently operates 75 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 29,000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.8 billion euros.

Undesirable machining distortion caused by residual stresses can occur during the milling of aerospace structural parts. As a result, time-consuming and cost-intensive reworking is required, which leads to additional costs in millions in the industry every year. To solve this problem, a model-based prediction of the machining distortion required, which can be used for a simulation-based process design. As part of a thesis, an already existing distortion simulation (Finite-Cell-Method) at the Fraunhofer IPT is to be further developed and used to derive compensation measures. The compensation approaches will then be validated in subsequent milling trials.

What you will do

  • Familiarization with the existing simulation (Finite-Cell-Method), programmed in Python and review of the state of the art
  • Further development and optimization of the simulation
  • Development and implementation of methods for the compensation of machining distortion
  • Execution of milling trials to validate the derived compensation approaches

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, production engineering, physics or a comparable subject
  • Good knowledge of programming with Python is recommended
  • You have a high degree of initiative and like to familiarize yourself with new topics
