The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 75 institutes and research

29,000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.8 billion euros.
The lifetime of turbine blades can be extended by renewing ceramic thermal barrier coatings. Current
stripping processes of these coatings are labor-intensive and are using hazardous chemicals. Waterjet-
and Laser-Stripping provide a green alternative for coating removal on high-performance parts of a
turbomachine engine even on complex geometries. A Technological Benchmark of two competing process
technologies for coating removals on complex geometries is required to obtain its future potential.

What you will do
Technological Benchmark of both laser- and waterjet technologies for coating removals on complex
geometries (stripping efficiency and quality):

  • Process parameter study on test geometry (2D)
  • Process design in 3D (CAM)
  • Turbine blade stripping trial
  • Analysis and evaluation of results

the Chair of Manufacturing Technology. According to the guidelines of the RWTH Aachen University,
the internship is preferably to be completed at a manufacturing company and can only take place with
