Bachelor-/ Master Thesis: Optimization of CAM Planning for Efficient Milling with Barrel Tools

Webseite Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnologie IPT
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 32,000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.
The »High-Performance Cutting« department develops technologies and application-oriented solutions for cutting along the entire process chain – from process design and pre-process simulation to real-time data acquisition during production, consulting, and prototype manufacturing. As part of your thesis, you will investigate how forces during the milling of thin-walled workpieces with barrel tools can be reliably predicted and compensated to ensure efficient CAM planning. This will include machining trials, data acquisition and analysis.
What you will do
- Conduct machining trials to determine relevant parameters for force modeling
- Simulate machining forces using an existing modelling framework
- Create an optimized CAM plan utilizing predicted forces
What you bring to the table
- You are studying mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics or a comparable subject area
- Basic knowledge of machining, force modeling, and technical mechanics is an advantage
- Ideally initial experience with CAM planning software (e.g. Rhino 3D or NX)
- Good language skills in German and/or English
What you can expect
- Professional supervision and collaboration within a dedicated team
- Becoming an integral part of the team from the very beginning, with the opportunity to contribute your ideas
- Involvement in innovative research and development projects with renowned industrial partners
- Access to state-of-the-art machinery equipped with extensive measurement technology
