Webseite Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnologie IPT

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 32,000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, more than 530 employees are working every day to make the production of the future more digital, more flexible, and more sustainable. In the »Laser Systems and Heating Technologies« group, we develop innovative laser systems for the modern production of the future. Our unique machinery at the Fraunhofer IPT covers prototypical processes of additive manufacturing, micro welding and targeted heating processes as well as ablation processes with high-power lasers.

As part of your thesis, you will investigate the current state of the art of software programs for digital CAx planning of laser-based additive manufacturing processes. Based on your research, you will program a digital interface for transferring component data to the machine control system. The thesis is completed by a complete run-through of the digital process chain from design to CAx planning, through data transformation to a successful process.
You will work on some of your tasks on site in our machine park.

What you will do

  • Researching CAx chains and digital tools in additive manufacturing, as well as the state of the art
  • Development of a concept for slicing components and coordinate transformation
  • Programming scripts to convert the CAx data into the required process format
  • Visualization and validation of the converted data on the real machine

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, CES or a comparable field of study
  • Initial knowledge of programming with Python or MatLab is advantageous
  • Ideally, you have some experience with lasers or additive manufacturing processes
  • An independent way of working and enjoy interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Good language skills in German and/or English

What you can expect

  • Scientific work on a current and practice-relevant topic
  • Professional supervision and technical support during the preparation of your thesis
  • A state-of-the-art machine park equipped with edge cloud systems and 5G infrastructure
