Webseite Department of Biohybrid & Medical Textiles (BioTex) AME - Institute of Applied Medical Engineering | Helmholtz Institute

The Department of Biohybrid and Medical Textiles at the Institute of Applied Medical Engineering focuses on the development of tissue-engineering solutions to address clinical needs. The aim of our research is the generation and optimization of implants in the cardiovascular, respiratory and hard tissue field, for example vascular grafts, biohybrid heart valves or a tissue-engineered trachea.

We are looking for a highly motivated student who is interested in interdisciplinary experimental work in the laboratory. Conventional oxygenators provide lung support for only a maximum of 30 days due to insufficient hemocompatibility of the gas exchange membranes. Membrane endothelialization can extend the application period and has been proven effective in small laboratory models. A spiral-coil oxygenator might be well suited for this purpose.

An oxygenator similar to the working principle of Kolobow-designed oxygenator is designed and 3D printed. In this oxygenator type, two silicone membranes are wound up with a spacer in between for air distribution (gas phase) and blood on the outside (liquid phase). The focus of the work will lie on redesigning the establish designing and optimizing it. The supervision will be in English.

Tasks:
-Perform established tests on oxygenators
-Redesigning establish model
-Literature research
-Documentation of results

Your profile:
-Master student in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or a similar program
-Experience in CAD is required
-Experience in Ansys is favorable
-Ability to work independently and in a team

Starting date: September/October 2023
Hours/week: 7 – 10
